Breakfast At Eagle Mills

Andrew Acomb On The John Deere Tractor At Eagle Mills

This week I’m on a third shift so I leave work around 8am. When I get home on Sundays while on this schedule, I like to go out and get some breakfast. Today we went to the Eagle Mills Cider Company. It’s located in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains in Broadalbin, New York. During the Spring season, they have an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet from 8am to 1pm on Sundays. It’s only $6.95 for adults! The buffet is outside with some seating under a pavilion. We sat under the sun overlooking the “Old Mill Stream”. They also have a bakery, gift shop, train ride, and a bunch of other stuff for kids (including me) to do.

Thanks Ray for taking this photo!

Out Of Surgery

May 22, 2007 at 11:15 pm (Family)

Me With My Mother After Surgery. She's Okay!

Today my mother had orthopaedic surgery on some of her cervical vertebrae. We saw her shortly after the surgery in the Intensive Care Unit where she will be for the rest of the night. She was a little loopy because of the medications, but still full of personality! Since she is doing so well, she will probably leave the unit in the morning.

The procedure took over 4 hours! I originally thought that they enter from the back of the neck to do the surgery. Actually, they enter from the front. So in order to get to the particular vertebrae, they have to hold the esophagus out of the way. Whoa!

Thanks to John C. Herzog from the Orthopaedic Associates of Saratoga for making it a successful surgery!

Portrait From The 2006 CPO Initiation by Andrew Acomb

If your just a split second too late, you may miss that moment you want to capture. It’s often challenging and sometimes frustrating, but extremely rewarding when you can get it. This is another candid portrait of a selectee during the 2006 CPO initiation season.

If your looking to improve your candid shots, check out the Digital Photography School Blog entry called 11 Tips for Better Candid Photography. It’s a good list of tips to start with.

Diggnation and Driving Don’t Mix

Diggnation and Driving Don't Mix by Andrew Acomb

Yesterday, I was leaving my house for an appointment and on the way I wanted to finish listening to the latest episode of Diggnation. I started heading down my driveway and at the same time I was trying to get the episode started on my iPod. It took just a couple of seconds, and I was in a ditch that runs along the edge of the driveway. I was completely stuck! Later that day, my father-in-law Ray came by and pulled me out. Luckily, the Jeep was okay. I definitely learned my lesson: it’s not safe to multitask while driving. It could have been a lot worse.

Gardenopoly

The Gardenopoly Champ by Andrew Acomb

This picture was taken at my mother’s place over the weekend. Saturday evening we played a little board game called Gardenopoly. It’s just like Monopoly except it has a garden theme: all the properties are named after plants, instead of “Go” it’s “Grow”, you put “Greenhouses” on your properties instead of hotels, and all the game pieces are types of garden equipment. I don’t think any of us saw it coming. My mother systematically eliminated all players, but me. She ended up owning the entire board except the two sets of properties I had. I think the only reason I lasted as long as I did was my shady techniques in trying to survive. I don’t think anyone really caught on until the very end! It didn’t help very much though. I was also quickly defeated.

Stunned Hairy Woodpecker

Holding A Hairy Woodpecker by Andrew Acomb

At work, I was telling someone about the subtle differences between the hairy woodpecker, the downy woodpecker, and the yellow-bellied sapsucker. It reminded me of this picture Jennifer took a couple of years ago of me holding a young hairy woodpecker. It flew into the sliding glass door on our back porch. I picked it up to make sure it was still alive. Luckily, it was just stunned. It sat in my hands for quite awhile before it flew away.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a great article on “How to Avoid Window Collisions“. We went with the sticker method. Since then, there have only been a handful of birds hitting the door.

Portait of a Sailor from the CPO Initiation by Andrew Acomb

I tried to get at least a couple of candid portraits of each selectee during the 2006 CPO initiation season. I think most of the time, these are the best kind of portraits. They can really capture a moment.

The White Hat

Saying Goodbye To The White Hat During CPO Initiation by Andrew Acomb

During the 2006 CPO initiation season, each selectee was given a moment to say a few things about their experiences that brought them to this point. In any job, and in life, it is important to remember the people, experiences, and choices made, whether good or bad, that helped get you to where you are now. Learning from the past will help you to control your present and change your future. In their new positions as Chiefs, they no longer wear the white hat. This was the last time they ever wore them.
